Biogeochemical Modeling Laboratory

Heather Kim, PhD

About the Lab

Our Biogeochemical Modeling Laboratory at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution aims to understand the impact and feedback of marine microbial processes on global carbon and biogeochemical cycles. We develop and utilize mechanistic biogeochemical models of differing complexity in conjunction with observational data, artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), and other data-driven modeling approaches.

Current research topics focus on how microbial-biogeochemical feedback impacts air-sea carbon flux and the ocean's biological pump, developing multi-scale models that combine microbial metabolic and biogeochemical processes, and evaluating the potential benefits and risks of marine carbon dioxide removal approaches, especially ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE).
