Biogeochemical Modeling Laboratory

Heather Kim, PhD  |  Department of Marine Chemistry & Geochemistry

Our laboratory aims to understand the impact of marine microbial and biogeochemical processes on the ocean carbon cycle and Earth's climate system. We develop mechanistic biogeochemical models of varying complexity, integrating observational data and artificial intelligence/machine learning. Current research focuses on how microbial-biogeochemical interactions impact air-sea carbon flux, developing multi-scale models that combine microbial metabolic and ecological processes, and evaluating the benefits and risks of marine carbon dioxide removal approaches, especially ocean alkalinity enhancement.

Join the Lab

If you are interested in joining the lab, the WHOI Summer Student Fellowship Program offers research opportunities for undergraduates, the MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography/Applied Ocean Science & Engineering offers graduate studies, and the WHOI Postdoctoral Scholarship Program offers postdoctoral research opportunities. Please contact Dr. Kim (hkim@whoi.edu) directly to discuss opportunities.
